Craft Map
The Craft Map
One forest district on the middle Volga, one technique, and a name that belongs to a market rather than a workshop. The questions are the turner, the painter, the metal, and surface or background painting.
Nizhny Novgorod

The city at the meeting of the Volga and the Oka, and the region that gives the craft its home. Production sits north and east of the city around Semyonov, where the factories, the museum and the training school are, and where turners and painters work in sequence on the same object. Nizhny itself was the fair city through which the whole industry was sold. A record should name both hands and the district, not the city.
Semyonov and the Working District
Northeast of the city, Semyonov is where the craft actually happens: factories, a museum and a school, with turners and painters working in sequence and the ovens that finish every piece. The surrounding villages supply timber and labour. It is also a matryoshka town with a distinct local style of its own, so two of Russia's best-known crafts are made in the same streets, which visitors routinely miss.
Khokhloma
The village that gave the style its name and made almost none of it. It was the trading point, the market where the forest villages brought their turned and painted ware to be sold onward, and the name travelled with the goods rather than with the makers. The distinction has been obscured ever since, which is why a label reading Khokhloma names a market and settles nothing about who turned or painted the piece.
Also on the Map
The Old Believers who fled the seventeenth-century schism into these forests, bringing an icon painter's method of imitating gilding with tin under tinted varnish, which is the entire technical basis of the craft. The kiln, without which the oil never ambers and the metal never reads as gold. And Semyonov's own matryoshka tradition, a separate local style made in the same town. Turner, painter, metal, painting type: four answers, and the name on the label refers to a village that never made any of it.
