The Craft Map
One town, one craft, and an unusual reason for both surviving: the river that made the place rich left, and the town was preserved by the poverty that followed.
Mompox, Bolívar: The Filigree

On an arm of the Magdalena in northern Colombia, founded in 1539 and bypassed when the channel silted in the late nineteenth century, Mompox holds a filigree tradition brought from Andalusia and derived ultimately from Islamic metalwork. Fine drawn wire is coiled and laid into a frame and soldered in a single pass. The workshops worked in gold while the river brought it and in silver since. The historic centre, four hundred and fifty-eight hectares, was inscribed by UNESCO in 1995 and is still in use for its original purposes. A record should name the workshop and the metal.
The Churches and Their Silver
The large-scale end of the same craft is in the town's churches, in processional fittings and mountings made when Mompox was wealthy. These are not for sale and are not intended to be; they are the reference standard, freely visible, against which the domestic jewellery of the present can be understood. Anyone assessing contemporary work should spend an hour with them first, and will find the comparison unflattering to a good deal of what is sold nearby.
Cartagena and the Coast
Where the trade went when the river silted, and where a great deal of filigree is now sold to people who will never reach Mompox. The coastal shops carry Momposino work alongside pieces made elsewhere in the same manner, at coastal prices, and the distinction is rarely offered. A purchase made on the coast happens at the end of a chain rather than at the bench, which is worth knowing before the transaction rather than after.
Also on the Map
The Magdalena itself, whose silting is the single event that determines everything about this town's present condition. And the wider filigree world, from Andalusia to the eastern Mediterranean, which is why technique alone establishes nothing about origin here. Which workshop, and then which metal: on this map those two answers are the whole of it.
