The Craft Map
One craft, one legally defined region, and a rare situation in which the boundaries of authenticity are published rather than argued about. The declaration names the districts; the standard names the method and the colours.
Puebla and the Protected Districts: Talavera Poblana

The denomination of origin declared in 1997 covers the districts of Puebla, Atlixco, Cholula and Tecali in Puebla state, together with San Pablo del Monte across the line in Tlaxcala. Within them, certified workshops produce tin-glazed earthenware to a published national standard: hand production, a nine hundred degree firing, and decoration restricted to blue, yellow, black, green, orange and mauve. A record should carry the workshop and the certification, both of which are checkable in a way almost nothing else in this collection is, and neither of which a seller can reasonably decline to provide.
The City as the Reference Object
Puebla's own buildings are the largest body of Talavera in existence, and they are free to look at. Facades, domes, church interiors and the great convent kitchens carry tile at a scale no collection can, and they show the palette working at the distance it was designed for. For calibrating an eye before acquiring anything, the streets outperform the shops, and an afternoon spent looking upward is the best preparation available.
Talavera de la Reina
In Castile, and the origin of both the name and the technique that crossed the Atlantic in the sixteenth century. It is a separate living tradition with its own protected designation, and the two were inscribed jointly by UNESCO in 2019, which is the formal recognition that they are one family and two practices. Comparing them directly is the fastest way to see what New Spain changed.
Also on the Map
The Manila galleon trade, which brought Chinese blue and white into New Spain and shaped what these potters were trying to resemble. And the local clay bodies, whose blend determines the weight and the coarseness that distinguish a traditional piece in the hand from an industrial one. Which workshop, and then certified or not: on this map both answers are documented.
