The Craft Map
The Potteries is a district of towns rather than a single settlement, and the firm names matter here more than in any other craft in this collection, because this was an industry of competing manufacturers rather than a village tradition. There is no geographical protection; provenance rests on factory marks, which in this district are unusually informative and often precisely datable.
Stoke-on-Trent: The Industry

The six towns that federated as Stoke-on-Trent, Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton, together formed the ceramic district. Each had its own works and its own character, and the concentration was extraordinary: coal beneath, clay to hand, canals to move both, and a labour force with generations of accumulated skill. A record naming Stoke is naming the district rather than a maker, and in this field the maker is what a collector needs.
Etruria: Jasper
North of Stoke, the works Josiah Wedgwood built in 1769 operated for 180 years and is where jasper was developed and perfected in 1774. It is the single most consequential address in British ceramic history and its significance is as much organisational as technical, because the factory was planned as a system rather than grown as a workshop. Any account of jasper that omits how the works was laid out has described the body and not the achievement.
The Marks: Where Provenance Actually Lives
In Staffordshire the base of a piece carries impressed or printed marks that identify the manufacturer and frequently the year, and this district's marking practice is thorough enough that dating is often exact rather than approximate. That is a luxury almost no other craft here enjoys. Any record of a Staffordshire piece should reproduce the mark, because it is the primary evidence and it is checkable against published references.
Also on the Map
The canals, which carried clay and coal in and finished ware out and without which the concentration would not have been possible. Cornwall, which supplied the china clay the district's finest bodies depend on. And the London showrooms, which turned a Staffordshire manufacture into an international one. Factory, body, year. Staffordshire is one of the few places where a record can carry all three with confidence.
