The Craft Map
Paper-cutting is practised across much of northern China, so its map is a set of distinct regional traditions rather than a single place, and naming the region is the minimum a record should do. Chinese paper-cut was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List in 2009, and the Yuxian tradition was included in that listing in October of the same year.
Yuxian, Hebei: The Carved and Coloured Cut
In the mountains west of Beijing, Yuxian, also written Weixian, developed the tradition that carves rather than cuts, working with fine knives through a bound stack of thin paper and colouring the results by hand with dye. The practice dates to the Ming and is the most technically distinct paper-cutting in China. Opera characters are its signature subject, drawn from the repertoire the region's audiences knew. Work here is produced in workshops, in batches, by specialists, and a record naming Yuxian is naming an industry rather than a household.
Yulin and Northern Shaanxi: The Household Cut
In the loess country of northern Shaanxi, the tradition remained domestic: red paper, scissors, freehand, made by women for their own windows and for their neighbours. The line is bolder, the symmetry looser, and the imagery draws on an older vocabulary of fertility, protection and animal forms. There are no workshops in the Yuxian sense, and pieces are usually attributable to a person rather than to a business. This is where the craft is closest to what it was before anyone thought to sell it.
The Windows Themselves: Where the Work Belongs
The papered window of a northern house is the setting this entire craft was designed around, and it is the only place a paper-cut performs as intended, lit from behind so the cut voids carry the image. Any assessment made under a gallery light is being made in the wrong conditions. The windows are on this map because they are the specification.
Also on the Map
The embroidery and indigo dyeing traditions of the same villages, which used paper-cuts as stencils and templates and are the reason this craft sits underneath others. The New Year markets, which are the distribution system. And the wider northern provinces, Shanxi and Shandong among them, which carry traditions of their own that are frequently sold under the same general name. Knife or scissors is the first thing to establish. The province is the second.
