The Craft Map
One valley, one market, and a distinction the market itself does not always make: between what is woven here and what is merely traded here. The identifying unit is the workshop, and the essential question is which loom.
Otavalo and the Valley Villages

In northern Ecuador, two hours from Quito, the town and the weaving villages around it, Peguche among them, hold the looms. The technical inheritance is mixed by history: the backstrap loom and the drop spindle from before the conquest, and the treadle loom, the spinning wheel, the carders and sheep's wool from the colonial obrajes that compelled the valley's labour. A record should name the village and the loom, because both are answerable and both change the object substantially, in price and in structure.
The Saturday Market
The market is the largest indigenous market in the region and functions as a wholesale hub as much as a retail one, drawing traders who buy in bulk for resale elsewhere. That is why goods from well outside the valley, and from well outside Ecuador, are on the tables alongside local weaving. It is a remarkable institution and it is not, in itself, evidence of where anything was made. Treating a purchase at Otavalo as a purchase from Otavalo is the single most common error made here.
Quito
Two hours south, the way most visitors arrive and a substantial market in its own right. A good deal of Otavalo weaving is resold in the capital at a margin the weaver never sees, alongside work from other provinces and from outside Ecuador entirely, presented under the same regional label. It is the second point in the chain where the object gets further from the loom while the story attached to it stays the same.

The obrajes, which are gone as buildings and present in every tool in the valley. The thirty-odd countries where Otavaleño families now live and trade, which is where a great deal of this cloth actually reaches its buyer. Which village, and then which loom: on this map those two answers separate the weaving from the trading.
