Craft Map
The Craft Map
One object made in several materials across a wide region, tied to a plant that grows only in one corner of the continent. There is no protective mark and the identifying facts are the material, the maker and the metal.
Corrientes and the Yerba Country
In the humid north-east of Argentina, Corrientes is one of the provinces where yerba mate is actually cultivated, and the gourd and the drink belong to the same landscape. Calabashes are grown, dried for months, selected and hollowed here and across the neighbouring provinces. A record should say what the body is, since calabash, wood and horn are all traditional and behave completely differently in use.
The Silver Mounts
The mounted mate is where a separate craft enters: a fitted rim, a foot, and sometimes a full engraved or repoussé casing, in silver or in the nickel alloy called alpaca, made by silversmiths rather than gourd workers. The finest historic examples are substantial pieces of metalwork and are collected as such. A record should state the metal plainly, because silver, alpaca and plate are routinely conflated in description.
The Gaucho Country
Beyond the yerba provinces, the mate belongs to the whole of the Argentine interior, and the silver-mounted examples are part of the same material culture as the worked belts, knives and harness of the gaucho tradition. That is where the finest metalwork sits, and it is a coherent body of work rather than a set of unrelated objects: the same silversmiths, the same manner of engraving, the same clientele.
Also on the Map
Paraguay and southern Brazil, which grow the same plant and share the same habit across borders that mean nothing to it. The bombilla makers, whose small filtered straws determine whether any of this works and who are almost never credited. And the gourds themselves, which are agricultural produce and cannot be made to order, so that shape and wall thickness are found rather than designed, and two identical mates do not exist. Which material, and then which metal: on this map both are simple questions that sellers routinely leave unanswered.
