Craft Map
The Craft Map
Two cities and three crafts that were building material, packaging and paint before anyone framed them. The questions are the maker, the fibre or pigment, the technique, and hand or machine.
Jeonju

The historic centre of hanji, in North Jeolla, with good water and a long record of official paper production, and now a preserved quarter of several hundred traditional timber houses with working workshops, a paper museum and an annual festival. A record should name the papermaker, state the fibre as paper mulberry, and confirm the sheet was formed by the crossing method and finished by beating, since both steps distinguish hanji from other East Asian papers.
Seoul: The Bojagi Collections

The capital holds the museum collections of wrapping cloths, court and domestic, and the practitioners who work in the tradition today. The pieced kind is assembled from offcuts with an enclosed triple-stitched seam that leaves no wrong side. A record should name the maker, give the fibre as ramie, silk or hemp, and confirm the seam construction, because a lined or overlocked piece is not this craft whatever it looks like from the front.
Seoul: The Painted Architecture
Dancheong is best studied on the palaces of the capital and on temple halls, where the pattern work on eaves, beams and bracket sets can be seen at close range, and the restoration workshops that maintain them are based in the city. A record should name the painter, state whether pigments are mineral or synthetic, and note that this is architectural work: what can be commissioned is a panel or a study, not the thing itself.
Also on the Map
The paper mulberry, cut in winter when the bark strips cleanly, whose inner bark is the whole material basis of hanji. The five directional colours that set the dancheong palette, blue-green for east, red for south, white for west, black for north and yellow for the centre. The sumptuary rule that reserved painted architecture to temples, palaces and official buildings and forbade it to everyone else, which makes the paint a legible statement of status. And hanji's modern career in the conservation of Western manuscripts, which is an unexpected second life for a flooring material. Maker, material, technique, hand or machine.
