The Craft Map
Two crafts, two towns, one court. Both are Akan, both carry proverbs, and they are made by entirely different processes in entirely different places.
Bonwire (Ashanti)

The weaving town, a short drive northeast of Kumasi, and the place most closely identified with kente. Work here is on the narrow horizontal treadle loom, strips assembled by hand into full cloths, and the neighbouring village of Adanwomase weaves to the same tradition. A record should name the weaver and state the strip count and the fibre, because a silk cloth and a rayon cloth of identical design differ in value by an order of magnitude and look similar in a photograph.
Ntonso
North of Kumasi on the Mampong road, Ntonso is where adinkra is stamped. The distinctive materials are the calabash stamps, carved individually and used until they wear out, and the bark dye boiled from badie with iron slag. The town is small and the work is done in family compounds and open yards. A record should name the printer, list the symbols in the order they appear, and state plainly whether the black is bark dye or a commercial substitute.
Adanwomase
Bonwire's neighbour and the second weaving town, working the same narrow loom and the same repertoire, and somewhat less visited. Cloth from here is regularly sold under the better-known name, which is not fraud so much as a habit of the trade, but a record that names the actual village and the actual weaver is worth more than one that names only the region.
Also on the Map
Kumasi, which is the court, the market and the reason both towns exist, and where the Adae observances put the cloth to its actual use. The Akan brass gold weights, cast until gold dust ceased to be currency around 1900 and now reproduced in volume for visitors. And the Asante traditional shrine buildings inscribed by UNESCO, whose moulded wall reliefs use a related symbolic vocabulary in earth rather than cloth. The question to put to any piece from here is which town, which hand, and which material, and a fourth question follows for kente alone: how many strips.
