About

Fair Isle is a rule before it is a look. Traditional patterns keep to a limited palette of around five colours, never use more than two in any single row, work in the round rather than back and forth, and hold each colour to a short run before changing. The complexity a buyer sees is produced entirely inside those restrictions. The style takes its name from Fair Isle, one of the Shetland islands, and reached a wide public when the Prince of Wales wore Fair Isle jumpers in 1921. For the collector, this is an object whose sophistication is a direct product of constraint.
