Craft Map
The Craft Map
Two crafts, two cities, and a good deal of desert between them. Bikaner is not near Jodhpur and Jaisalmer is not where either craft is made, so a record naming this destination has not yet named a place. Where a Geographical Indication exists it ties the craft to its city.
Jodhpur: Marwar Miniatures

Under the fort at Mehrangarh, the Marwar school produced court painting from the seventeenth century to the nineteenth, in profile portraiture and durbar scenes against wide desert ground. After 1803, under Maharaja Man Singh and his Nath guru, the studio turned to ascetics and cosmological subjects and worked for monasteries as well as the palace. The palace museum holds the reference collection. No Geographical Indication attaches to the painting, so scholarship and collection history do that work here.
Bikaner: Usta Kala

Some two hundred and fifty kilometres north of Jodhpur, Bikaner holds a gold craft brought from Iran in the later sixteenth century to decorate the fort, and still practised by a small number of families. Manoti is the embossed method and naqqashi the flat one; camel hide is the signature support, with wood, marble and plaster alongside it. The Anup Mahal inside Junagarh is the craft at architectural scale. Bikaner Usta Kala holds Geographical Indication protection.
Jaisalmer
Further west toward the Pakistan border, the yellow sandstone fort city whose merchant havelis carry stone carving of extraordinary fineness, screens cut thin enough to pass light and facades worked over decades. It gives this destination half its name and carries no craft against it in the golden mapping, which is worth stating rather than quietly filling. What is here is architecture, and it is not for sale.
Also on the Map
The Nath monasteries of Marwar, which are where a good deal of nineteenth-century painting was actually destined. And the camel itself, which supplies the hide one of these two crafts is built on, and whose availability has always set the ceiling on how much of it can be made. Which city, and then which method: on this map the second answer is the one that sets the labour.
