Craft Map
The Craft Map
Three crafts in three states, none at the towns this destination is named for. Each is tied to its place by a different mechanism, and in one case the tie is literally chemical.
Bidar, Karnataka: Bidriware

North-west of Hyderabad, in Karnataka, Bidar holds a metal craft that cannot be fully made anywhere else. The body is cast in copper and zinc at about one to sixteen, engraved, and inlaid with hammered silver wire. The finish uses soil from the unlit interior of Bidar fort, worked with ammonium chloride into a paste and rubbed on hot, which blackens the alloy and leaves the silver untouched. Bidriware holds Geographical Indication protection. A record should say not only where a piece was made but where it was blackened.
Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh: Kalamkari

South and east, in Andhra Pradesh, Srikalahasti is a temple town and the home of the pen version of kalamkari, drawn entirely freehand with a bamboo or reed pen on cloth prepared with buffalo milk and myrobalan. Its subjects are temple subjects. The other kalamkari centre, Machilipatnam, works in blocks and in floral pattern; both hold protection and they are not interchangeable, so a record naming kalamkari alone has left out the essential half.
Cheriyal, Telangana: The Scrolls
Closest to the destination, in Telangana, the village of Cheriyal holds the Nakashi families who painted narrative scrolls on khadi for the Kaki Padagollu balladeers, three feet wide and forty to forty-five feet long, read out panel by panel in performance. Cheriyal scroll painting received Geographical Indication protection in 2007. Much current production is masks and single panels; a record should say which, because a scroll and a panel are not the same tradition doing the same thing.
Also on the Map
The unlit rooms of Bidar fort, which are a raw material rather than a monument. The Kaki Padagollu themselves, whose profession is the reason the scrolls have their shape and whose decline is the reason they no longer do. And Machilipatnam on the coast, the block-printing centre constantly confused with Srikalahasti. Which state, and then which town: on this map the first answer is the one the destination name gets wrong.
